Backpackers Only: 8 essential tips

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

For serious backpackers, there’s nothing more special than the contentment and peace that only offer the solitude of travel.

However, the desert can be hazardous to one. One false move or a mistake can cause accidental injury or death with no backup available to help. The following are eight tips for a solo hiker.

1. Give a friend your itinerary. This may sound simple, but many fail to let others know where they go or when you expect to return. Letting someone else knows your basic projects, they will know when and where to start looking for you in case something happens. Sometimes the most basic necessities can be a lifesaver.

2. Bring a flashlight to LED. It is advisable to always carry a light source for a walk, even if you plan a day trip. An LED flashlight is lighter, more compact, more energy efficient that conventional flashlights. While small mammals such as rats and mice are representatives of the rodent family, others, furry creatures more attractive, are also members of this group. An animal that is the Capybara, the mammal from South America with the distinction of being the largest species of rodent in the world. At first glance, the large size and shape of the Capybara often gives the impression that the observers have to do with a kind of big hairy pig. A closer look reveals, however, features much like a rodent with brown fur coat and guinea pigs as the face.

Capybara may be more than four feet long and weigh up to 200 lbs. To keep their large size, these herbivores must spend most of their time grazing on vegetation and grasslands. Despite their need to take a lot of food, I am very picky about the type of vegetation they eat and generally stick species feed on leaves just five or six. Most of the herbs that ingest occur in aquatic environments and surroundings, and this is really big rodent semi-aquatic in nature. Capybara are slightly webbed feet and make use of this adaptation to cross rivers, lakes, and escape predators. This large rodent also requires a lot of time in water for cooling in hot and tropical in which they occur. (more…)
